There is something exceptionally magical about the lights and decor of the holiday season. My family and I make it a point every year to explore the lights and decorations around the neighborhood and beyond, while soaking in the beauty of Christmas any chance we can. This year I am going to be adding a new tradition to our usual agenda - and I cannot wait!
Last week I had the privilege of joining a group of local bloggers to visit Longwood Gardens. I've been to Longwood several times in the spring but it has been a few years since I visited during the Christmas holidays. Let me tell you - boy did I forget what I was missing! The best way I can describe it is "a magical winter wonderland". You cannot help but sink deep into the spirit of Christmas as you enjoy all of the beauty before your eyes.
With more than 500,000 twinkling lights as well as lush decorated trees, beautiful flowers and berries galore, this 1,077 acre estate is turned into a breathtaking experience perfect for date night, girls night out or a fabulous family outing.
If planning a visit this holiday season, you are certainly in for a treat. You can enjoy the beauty of the crisp outdoors as over 74 trees will light the grounds as you stroll the gardens. You will be given the opportunity to enjoy the dancing fountains, festive holiday music, an outdoor train display, and beautifully handcrafted natural edible ornaments strung from the beautiful Wildlife Tree. Visitors are welcome to sing along with the organ in the Ballroom, enjoy the strolling performances throughout weekends or listen peacefully to the angelic choir performances at night. In the Conservatory, you will be dazzled by dangling white paper stars, floral trees, an exquisitely decorated 64 ft long dining table in the Exhibition Hall, poinsettias galore, balls, paper origami decorations and more - all while keeping warm and toasty. The Longwood Gardens Christmas display is one of the area events local families are certain not to want to miss. What a perfect yearly family tradition to begin!
Are you wondering when is the best time to visit, especially if you plan to come with the whole family? Tuesday through Thursdays typically draw less crowds whereas weekends and the entire week between Christmas and New Years is most likely to draw the highest volume of visitors. Another bonus - children 4 and under are free. By visiting during non peak days, Monday through Friday (except Dec 26th through 31st), you will save up to $7 per ticket, making it a more affordable option. I suggest purchasing tickets online prior to going to Longwood to ensure admittance, especially on peak days.
